Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith released two fantastic double-disc sets with their great Yo Miles! band (Upriver and Sky Garden) that, unfortunately, went out of print far too quickly. So Smith decided to take all the originals (that is to say, the non-Miles-penned tunes) from those albums and re-release them with some previously unreleased live material. The results are the digital-only Yo Miles: Lightning and Yo Miles: Shinjuku albums. Shinjuku takes four cuts from Sky Garden and augments them with a 25-minute previously unreleased live cut, "Muhammed Ali."

This record at times is the sum of its parts and the strength of its parts. At times, you can plainly tell the player from 100 yards away with your eyes closed, but then you can hear them echoing the ghosts of those who came before them.
